It should be remembered that a marriage ceremony is a serious and binding commitment between two people and shouldn't be entered into lightly. In Australia, you are free to marry without permission if you are 18 years or older. If you are between 16 and 18 years of age, you must obtain written permission from parents or legal guardians plus you must obtain authorisation from a judge or magistrate. If you are under 16 years of age you are not permitted to marry.

Once you choose your Celebrant you will need to bring the following documents with you:

1. The Notice of Intended Marriage form

This must be completed at least one full month before your marriage and no more than 18 months beforehand.

2. Birth Certificate or Passport

If you were born in Australia, you will need to bring either your original Birth Certificate or your Australian or overseas passport. If you don't have an original Birth Certificate, you will need to apply to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Click here for information. If you were born overseas  you can use your current Passport if don't have your Birth Certificate If you have been previously married, your most recent Decree Absolute or Certificate of Divorce is required. If you have been widowed, please bring the Death Certificate. All of these documents are required to correctly complete the Notice of Intended Marriage.

3. Changing Your Name

If the bride or Groom intends changing her / his name after marriage, she/ he must now apply for a registered copy of the Marriage Certificate from the Registrar of Births Deaths and Marriages. Nowadays, the presentation certificate given to you after your marriage is not considered proof of identity for banking institutions, driver's licence or passport applications. I will provide you with the necessary documentation for you to apply for a Marriage Certificate at the time you lodge your NOIM so you don't need to worry about providing proof of identity at a later date. This document is then lodged with your marriage registration paperwork and you will receive your registered copy of the marriage certificate in the mail 4 - 6 weeks after the wedding ceremony. The bride or the groom may choose one of the following family name options in a passport due to marriage: retain your existing family name; or adopt your spouse’s family name; or adopt a combination of your family name and your spouse’s family name with or without hyphens. For example if Lisa Smith marries Tom Jones her name after marriage could be; First Name   Family Name Lisa               Smith Lisa               Jones Lisa               Smith Jones Lisa               Jones Smith Lisa               Smith-Jones Lisa               Jones-Smith

4. International Couples

You are most welcome to be married here in Australia. Australian law allows and recognises Australian marriages of foreign nationals. Your marriage here will be recognised in most countries around the world. For international couples you must apply for your Birth Death and Marriages official marriage certificate before you leave Australia. I will help you with this. For citizens of New Zealand, the United States or the United Kingdom,  your “real” legal marriage certificate from the Birth Deaths and Marriage  is sufficient. If you are not from these countries, you will need an Apostille. Click here for the application form. Once you have decided on your wedding day and date, please contact me to confirm if the your chosen date is available. You can then arrange for a obligation free face to face meeting to ensure you both feel comfortable with me as your Celebrant. If the correct documentation is provided, in the right timeframe, everything will go smoothly.

5. Witnesses

Please remember that you are required to have two witnesses over the age of 18 who can read and understand English to sign the marriage documentation. I can of course help you with this if required.
